Make sure you have a PB blaster and a spare screw set!

I received error code P1457 on my 02 Civic LX which caused the check engine light to come on. After some digging, it turned out that the problem was either in the canister vent valve or the carbon filter. It was about 1/4 the cost of a charcoal can, so I decided to try that first. Installation was very difficult because if you live somewhere with snow it's almost guaranteed that the 2 screws holding this are so badly rusted that they'll just snap if you try to remove them. To make matters worse, it's not a square head screw like it probably should be, it's just a standard Phillips head screw so it's a huge pain to get it out. I ended up having to use a blowtorch and vise to remove the screws. But that's not all. On the other side there are small hollowed out brass threads that the screws go into, I assume this is because plastic is not a good screw anchor. Once you've removed the part, you should end up with raw anchor bolts. Huge pain and it lasted about 30 minutes longer than ever. Do yourself a favor and blast the bolts with a PB blaster the night before and head to the parts store to get some spare bolt sets. This saves you a lot of time. *** 4 days later and my check engine light is no longer on ***
