We mainly use it for serving pasta dishes and its size is good for that purpose. The material it is made of is light and not as dense as porcelain or stoneware, making it easier to handle. It also makes it more fragile: I dropped an aluminum bread pan on the rim of the bowl and it broke. But we like the bowl, so I bought it again.
