I have a very strange opening at the top of the stairs. It's a little taller than the average doorpost, and there's a built-in bookshelf that makes positioning one of these kids' gates tricky. The extra inch for each wall sitter really helped. I decided to try them and they worked great. Very strong, great grip and they hold the gate in place very well. I didn't want to drill into my walls unless it was necessary, and this saved me from it. They had great reviews but I was definitely a little skeptical. Although I voluntarily sing their praises here. A simple idea, but brilliant. Good product.
