The base of the phone holder snaps directly over the dash alarm button. Once removed, you have access to ventilation controls and emergency lighting. The version I bought has a metal phone holder with carbon fiber stickers. 2 "arms" on the side pivot up (gear mechanism) and hold the phone in place when the phone's weight pushes down. Holds my iPhone 7 firmly in the Otterbox Symmetry case, but I doubt anything thicker will fit inside. Now for the bad: I want the finish on the air vent mount to be glossy to match the car's interior trim. More like a rubbery grey-black. The ball mount that connects the phone mount to the cradle is also poorly designed. It uses turnbuckles to apply pressure when the mount is in place, but it also makes the phone mount vibrate as it moves. Generally a decent solution, but I'll look for something more solid.
