I have this between my AppleTV (with tablet remote) and my "how else works" component? Only 720p TVs from 2000. This works great! Sound and video are exactly as expected and it didn't yell at me due to an HDMI protection scheme. Of course, I primarily use my Apple TV to watch baseball, which may not have these extra security measures. The problem is that they're putting something of this size in a place where they expected a nice, small, slim HDMI cable. So if you place the audio output at a right angle, it has to come out exactly where, for example, the power cable should be. I solved this problem with a rectangular audio adapter, but the best solution would be to use a very short HDMI extender between this and the target device.
