I recommend placing the template 6 inches from the bottom of the door. If you want your cat to get through, just raise your paws over the edge and don't bend down to get in. I have an 11 lb cat. And 6 inches at the top was just the right height (the instructions say 2 or 3 inches). 🙀 The end pieces look like they could easily be painted, the inner rim is plastic. Duct tape tabs work well, but it's easy to mess things up a bit when trying to connect the pieces. my cat used it straight away and my dog can no longer enjoy the cat box treats! 😸
