After 2 weeks of research online I was in the process of installing an in ground fence when it occurred to me that wireless devices might be available. They turned out to be, and this one seemed to have the features I wanted, the same features I was looking for in a ground unit (performance, build quality, decent collar battery life). Before going wireless, you must understand the limitations of the wireless nature of the device and balance this with your needs and the physical layout of your property. If everyone agrees like me, when properly installed and configured the device performs almost as well as a floor installation. I set up the whole system in 1.5 hours and it took me time. I set up the device following the steps that seemed most logical to me after reading the instructions: 1) Measure your property and determine the radius/diameter of the desired clear area. I measure the diameters and find their intersection, just like in woodworking. 2) Find the geometric center of your location and determine the point in your house that it corresponds to. This gives you a starting point when you are about to decide where to permanently install it in your home. 3) Temporarily set up a base station at this location (a few feet off the ground as per the manual) and estimate the distance to the border to set it up. 4) Go through your lot and check the furthest points where a boundary line should be placed (assuming your lot isn't perfectly round like mine is). Adjust the base unit setting until these items are set correctly. 5) Permanently install the base unit, check again. 6) Train your dog. The physical design of the base is junk plastic with the power supply, circuit board and antenna. That. I think it's fine if you install it and never touch it again (like in my case), but if you plan on using it on the go (as advertised) I'd think it's a bit cheap. The collar receiver design is very good. In short, when this type of device works for you, it's amazing compared to the hassle of installing a system in the ground. If your setup isn't built for WiFi, you'll be disappointed with the results. highlighted.
