I bought two of these aquariums because my Aqueon Whisper 10 is too strong for my fish. I cut the bottom off one and leave the other intact. First, I put a cut sponge on the intake pipe of the Aqueon filter and an uncut sponge on the bottom (closed bottom). It covers the entire intake pipe of the Aqueon filter. This, along with the drain-blocking Aqueon plastic bottle, makes my aquarium safe for even the tiniest ghost shrimp. My cock tail is no longer sucked into the filter. Oh I have a rock just below the filter pipe to prevent the sponges from falling and floating away due to a power outage. They slide down a bit when the power goes out, but shouldn't fall all the way down. Don't be afraid to use them with filters from other manufacturers. If the straw fits, it will help your delicate or small fish.
