Review on Master Tailgaters Chrome Tailgate Handle with Backup Camera - Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra (1999-2006) Replacement by Sam Duppa

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Extremely accurate and too wide-angled

This product is a great idea and would be a really great product if the developers hadn't made two mistakes. First, as other reviewers point out, the fit isn't great. This will help trim the foam pads on either side of the grip, but even then the grip won't be tight. Second, although the sellers proudly boast that the camera has a very wide field of view of 170 degrees, in reality the camera would be much more useful if the field of view was significantly narrower. At 170 degrees, the image is very distorted, and the ultra-wide angle makes measuring distances impossible, which is very important when reversing. Furthermore, the wide angle means that about a third of the image captures the open sky, which, on top of being unusable, means that in daylight, due to the bright skies, the auto exposure function will darken the rest of the image to compensate for the image of the earth being too dark. About half the time I can't even see the clutch because the image is too dark to compensate for the sky. The wide angle also means the hitch image is too small to be of any use. You can see there is a problem there, but the image is so small (even with the 7" screen I'm using) that you can't use the image to align the pendant with the ball. This product would have been a lot more useful if the developers had pointed the camera down another 20 degrees to keep the sky out of the frame, and then narrowed the field of view so the camera would only see the rear bumper below the frame. and the horizon above.
