I started sleeping on the floor about 8 years ago after experiencing back pain which I assumed was caused by sleeping on a mattress. After eight years without back pain, I decided to try the more traditional Japanese futon. I slept on 3″ thick firm foam with 0.5″ memory foam filling that was difficult to keep out of the way. I ordered a futon and it arrived the next day packed in a box and the futon itself. was sealed in a plastic bag wrapped in thick paper. In short, it was very well packaged for delivery. Like the other reviewer, I was expecting the futon to be a bit thicker. The spec says it's 3 inches thick, but it's actually about 2 inches, so I was a little worried I might have to buy a second futon or another mattress pad to put it on. After three better nights, I worried that the fat was gone. I usually wake up several times during the night, but since sleeping on this futon I've had a very deep sleep and only wake up when it's time to get up. I will update this review if anything changes but for now I am very happy with this product. Updated 07/05/17. It's been about a year and a half and this futon has held up pretty well. It's slightly yellowed in a few spots, probably because I don't sun dry it, although I know I should.
