Let's face it, photography is an expensive hobby. And while I agree that more money usually gets you better products, for relatively new players like me, spending $200 on a flash right at the gate is a bit much. I was looking for a cheap but good quality flash. which I found with Bower SFD728C. It is ETTL compatible with my Canon XTi so learning to use the shoe flash is as easy as using the built in flash. The reference number is also relatively high (I can't remember the exact number) and I was able to film a wedding in a small church without much effort. It also has pan and swivel capabilities, which aren't as common at this price point, allowing for all the essential rebound functionality. My only complaint was that the locking ring wasn't very secure and the flash sometimes slipped too far. enough of the contacts to cause the camera to parry an attempted or mistimed flash. Overall though, I found the Bower SFD728C to be an easy to use, good quality, reasonably priced flash. I'm sure there are some opportunities that could be had with Canon's branded flashes for 2-3 times the price, but I haven't missed them yet.
