If you have an HDMI source device like a Blu-ray player and all you have is a VGA monitor and some bass speakers, then this is the device for you. It connects to a monitor's VGA input and has a small stereo output jack that fits the line jack of any amplified speaker set used on a computer. This will allow you to play any HDMI signal on your VGA monitor/projector and some will play it through a good sound system. This is a cheap alternative to buying an HDMI monitor/TV. No software required, the device is plug and play. A limitation. The length of the HDMI cable is crucial. Keep it as short as possible. A friend's 12-foot cable was causing the monitor to "blink," indicating signal loss. A shorter cable solved this problem.
