Review on πŸ’» ADWITS M.2 Key M NVME and AHCI SSD to PCIe Adapter PCB, Compatible with Samsung 960 970 EVO PRO WD Black and More, Supports PCIe 4X 8X 16x by Toby Galbraith

Revainrating 5 out of 5

tested at 5000MB/s - that's 8x faster than SATA III

I installed this on an ASRock server motherboard that doesn't seem to like PCIe fanout (necessary for some other quad Core M cards) .2) . I installed 4 x 2TB HP SSDs and set up a software RAID on Ubuntu 18.04, leaving me with 6TB of usable storage on the card. My BIOS only reports the first 2 SSDs - I think I've reached the limit for the number of NVME drives the BIOS supports. displayed, but Linux recognized all 4 drives, allowing me to set up and test all 4 drives in a RAID 5 array. I'm getting a solid 5000MB (that's 5 gigabytes) per second from the array. That's about 8x faster than anything connected via a SATA III interface, although it's not quite the 6000MB/s that an 8-lane PCIe slot can achieve with the overhead of RAID parity. (Note that while it's physically a x16 card, electrically I believe it's only an x8). Overall, the performance is very decent, but does not quite reach the limits of other hardware. The card has a nice big heatsink and a big thermal pad to improve heat dissipation - that seems to do the trick for now. The card uses either a Molex or SATA power connector (it has both) to provide enough power for the SSDs. I would have preferred to see a standard 6 or 8 pin PCIe power connector (as found on high-end graphics cards) - it would be more traditional and could provide a more reliable power supply. But for now Molex works with my SSDs (although some other SSDs require more power than mine). Overall it meets my expectations. The biggest problem with this card might be that Revain sometimes limits you to less than 4 best SSDs :)
