I just got this ashtray but already love it. As others have said, there is enough friction in the lid hinge. The 5 inch version is perfect for a handy ashtray that, open or closed, can easily be carried around the garden with one hand. But it also looks good. It would be completely out of place in the house. And they made sure to position the hinge on mine so that it wouldn't tip over at all, even if I tapped the tube out with the lid fully open.
