Review on SUNPAK 620 080 Sunpak Tripod by Mike Wallace

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Tired of old reviews. The new model is not as good as the old one

I have both the previous and current versions of this tripod (same model number), both purchased from Revane. The old version (golden brown) is a great tripod for the money. I paid the same amount they are selling for now. I wanted a second tripod for my second camera and bought another one. This is a tripod, it's multi-adjustable, it's lightweight, and it has a quick-release plate. It has some nice features, but it's not what it used to be. This new version (the black tripod pictured in the Revain listing) is nowhere near as good as the old one (the gold tripod pictured). Plastic seems to be significantly cheaper and more brittle. All aluminum feels thinner, the cross braces connecting the legs to the central vertical bar are much thinner and feel cheaper, the head flexes a lot even when well dressed. The quick release plates are much lighter (thinner plastic and also not compatible with the old model) and overall they feel a bit cheaper compared to the old version. This used to be my favorite tripod, but I definitely won't be recommending it again. It says it supports £10 cameras, but trying to even use my D5300 on it and the amount of head flex bothered me. I don't think I want to see how it would look with a heavier setup. It's probably fine for aiming, pro, webcams etc, but I don't think I'd put a DSLR on it unless I desperately need it. I certainly wouldn't carry a tripod with a DSLR on it. If you have the old version you are reliable but I wouldn't recommend this new one. Disappointing drop in quality from Sunpak
