Not pure copper and possibly a toxic material?

Cups look aesthetically pleasing. When they arrived they were pretty shiny. I didn't even check to see if they had creases. I bought two boxes, total 16 cups. After only using the first cup once, I see the coating on the cups at the bottom dissolving. I drank something sour with lime, but after the first rinse without a sponge, a black substance appeared. There is a black substance underneath the copper metal, so I don't think these mugs are "PURE COPPER" at all. . It has to be a complete lie. And now I'm a little worried about what this stuff actually is. If they claim it is pure metal then what is black material? Maybe they're made in China and don't really care if the material is food safe (even if the advertising says so - who actually checks?). One of the mugs arrived with a small chip. and you can see this black stuff underneath. Another comment also mentioned this and I realize I should really have paid attention to that because now I'm worried about what this stuff is now. Who cares, these mugs look great. I am concerned right now that there are toxic metals in my drinks.

Pros
  • Kitchen and dining room
Cons
  • Slightly torn
