I bought this irrigator for the treatment of periodontitis and a tooth with root canal treatment + crown. I'm amazed at how much cleaner my mouth is after using it. However, I recommend reading the instructions before using it, it is not a plug and play device. I chose this model because I like that the tank can be used as a lid. I have cats who like to drink out of the sink and I love my hairspray (but not the excess hairspray that ends up on my countertop) so I like it closed so it stays clean. I also think it has a lower profile in my already cluttered small bathroom compared to other models. First I flushed and collected the tanks. I then practiced in front of a mirror WITH THE POWER OFF, making sure to angle the wand at the right angle to get between my teeth and under the gumline before filling it with water. The instructions say to hold it at a 90° angle, but I also place it at a 45° angle to the back molars so it cleans the periodontal pockets better. I hold the jet on each molar for about 8 seconds and each front tooth for about 5 seconds. Sometimes I need to add more water, but I want to get my teeth cleaned properly because of gum disease. This was done on the advice of a dentist. I also found it interesting that the package insert states that if you require prophylactic antibiotics before a dental procedure, as I do, you should consult your dentist before using them. I waited until I was done brushing my teeth before I started getting rid of all those baddies from under my gums. The normal tip suits me on medium settings. I have some sensitivity and inflammation to deal with so I have to be gentle but also keep the area clean. The pick pocket (only use in gentle mode) only hurts a specific tooth that has a feeding problem, but it doesn't hurt like dental floss or interdental brushes, so that's a good thing. When the jet touches my tongue or cheek a little, it tickles. So don't turn it on at full power when you don't need it. Overall, I'm surprised I like this Waterpik as much as I do. Flossing has long been a painful but necessary practice for me, but I'm much more comfortable with an irrigator. Using warm water is especially helpful for sensitive gums. I know it will help me keep up with my regular oral hygiene routine.
