Review on Oster 5712 Electronic 6 1 Quart Steamer by Pascal Santos

Revainrating 5 out of 5

5 years of happy use!

I've been using this steamer for almost five years (bought February 2009) and I love it. The first thing I used it for was hard boiled eggs because I never cook them right on the stove. This steamer cooks them perfectly and makes them easy to clean. A NOTICE. Depending on the altitude you live at, figuring out exactly how long to set your vaper will take a little trial and error. I usually steam fish and vegetables. It keeps the fish moist and reduces any fishy taste. I spray the PAM bowls liberally to make cleaning easier. Over time, I learned how long to steam different types of fish and pieces of different sizes. I no longer live where I can buy fresh fish. This steamer works great with frozen fish straight from the freezer. I put most of the fish in a large tray with holes in the bottom. For more fragile fish like sole or thinly sliced flounder, I put them in a rice pan and add some oil and spices. It turns out the perfect crumbly rice that doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. I stir the rice every now and then when I think about it, but if the rice is stirred too much it gets sticky. Again, the times given in the instructions are approximate. It is very important to empty the lower water tank after each use as the steam condensing on the steam will flow back into it. It's easy to clean - I just pour out the water and then rinse. Sometimes I wipe first with a soapy sponge. I make sure some of the clean water also flushes out the "spout" where you can add extra water during cooking if needed. After the steam cycle is complete, the device does not switch off but continues to keep the food hot. That means she'll keep cooking, so I made sure the broccoli wasn't overcooked (I hate it when that happens!). The HOLD function makes this steamer ideal for storing food. warm when you're having fun. I can put it on a buffet table or use it to warm up when I'm cooking a seated dinner. It also does its job well, keeping scrambled eggs hot, fluffy, and juicy for brunch.
