While the overall height is decent, the portion of the pan that contains the filler is fairly flat. I like to crumple the litter about 3 inches deep so the urine has time to thicken before it hits the bottom, and this pan is way too shallow. I found myself scraping the bottom and sides, picking off all sorts of little bits that were too small for a shovel. does increase the likelihood of the "thing" getting in the crate, but I also found it gets in the way when shoveling Plus, I have two cats that don't turn in the crate - they come from the front come in, do your thing. Case and side exit - so the bottom front edge doesn't help much to keep things inside. All is not lost - I rescue kittens and isolate them on their first night and this box is perfect for them: it's low to the very top. Bottom, I can keep the litter low (because only a kitten uses it), it's bigger than a foil lasagna bowl, and they can dig to their heart's content. for my free-roaming cats in winter.
