Review on πŸ“· Laowa Venus 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens - Nikon F Mount by Edgar Clark

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great compact ultra wide angle lens

I bought this early as a Kickstarter support item and I'm glad it's finally on sale at Revain. This lens has many advantages:* Ultra wide angle, as wide as full-frame cameras* Fast lens, aperture f/2.8. Wide range of lenses - f/4 (e.g. Irix, Canon).* Very compact and light weight despite the metal construction* One of the great accessories is the 100x100mm filter holder which replaces the lens hood and works pretty well, what is unique for such lenses Ultra wide angle lens. Try to get this for existing 14mm lenses!* Very sharp and no distortion from straight lines as advertised.* Infinity-Focuses right on infinity which is also at the very end of the body, very easy to access in total darkness focus. A few downsides: * There's some coma (distortion of the stars), but it's not bad * The aperture only stops at whole stops, no half or third stops. However, you can remove the spring and turn the lens into a "cinematic" lens with little effort.* The f/2.8 aperture seems closer to f/3.3, it's no stop lighter than f/ 4.* Fully manual lens, but it has an inverted aperture and can be calibrated using Nikon's custom lens settings. It has become my go-to wide-angle travel lens, replacing the Nikon 14-24 in most cases unless I want to capture complex astroscapes. Highly recommended.

Pros
  • Widest f/2.8 straight lens for full frame cameras
Cons
  • Almost ok
