Review on Sangean PR-D4W Portable Weather Alert Radio with AM/FM Bandwidth Narrowing and Auto Tracking for Improved Searchability by Josh Garber

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great radio but the sound could be better.

Overall this is a great radio as are the various Sangeans I've had over the years. But I advise you to read radio guru Jay Allen's review. Not only does this give you some interesting information on how this radio works, but also how I figured out how to adjust the sound (on AM only) even though the unit doesn't have a tone control. This information is undoubtedly in the owner's manual, but I thought I'd pass it along in case like me you haven't read it. I was surprised when the radio sounded unacceptably muffled. After reading Jay's incredibly detailed (and very positive) review, I found a solution to improve it. Holding down the "DISPLAY" button (below "BANDWIDTH") displays the bandwidth. My radio defaults to 2.5kHz (VERY muted). Pressing the TUNING arrows up or down increases or decreases the bandwidth, which acts as a fairly effective tone control. I've settled on 6.0kHz as a reasonable setting for voice over radio, but different listening abilities and source material can be accommodated by changing the bandwidth. Note that even when using the "Sound" bandwidth adjustment, the audio was unfortunately still a bit muffled, hence the 4 star rating instead of 5. But otherwise, damn it, AM radio.

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Cord is shorter than other picks
