The high part at the back that goes over the heel behind the ankle makes these shoes perfect for mountain trails. It fits snugly around the ankle to keep rocks, spikes and sharp grass out of the shoe. The mesh material is quite dense and does not let in small particles. We have a lot of cheatgrass here with these sharp seeds that go through your socks, they get into your shoes, they go through most mesh materials and eventually go through the mesh and your shoes, but I haven't had a chance to see them or eventually kick them through the ankle area. There are no flat spots to run on, so it's all uphill or downhill, and it stays in place and doesn't slip like most other running shoes. The main reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that they are 100% thin lightweight plastic and don't seem to last very long. Don't wear them around a fire, a small ember and they turn to napalm.
