Review on New Balance KJ990V4 Running Little Girls' Shoes for Athletic by Eddy Borghesi

Revainrating 3 out of 5

small, quite expensive

I have 9 year old fraternal twins, one of whom is 92% taller and has big legs for her age. For the past few months she has been watching with envy as her sister got two new pairs of sneakers and a new pair of sandals, so I was happy to try on these shoes in her size for free, or so I thought. She has just received a new pair of tennis shoes from our regular Geox brand, but she needs two pairs, one for everyday use and one specifically for the gym where they cannot be worn outdoors. She was very excited when I told her I had ordered them, she loved how they look in the photos on the product page. They arrived today and she was so happy until she put them on, they were too small, her fingers touched the inside of the toes of the shoes, she was very disappointed. I took a picture of the Geox shoes she received two weeks ago, size 38 or 5.5, and these New Balance shoes to show you the difference in length, the heels of both shoes are against the wall, as you can see the New Balance is noticeably shorter despite being the same size (38 EU 5.5 US). I understand there is a sizing difference between manufacturers but both pairs of new tennis shoes my other daughter received were New Balance and they fit as expected (KV888V1) although she also just took off a pair of Geox so I guess that the sizing issue is with this particular New Balance model. These shoes also didn't feel as flexible as I would have liked and when I saw the price of $99.95 I was incredibly shocked because I would never pay that much for a baby shoe that outgrows in 6 months would. There is little to no arch support, but at least the insole is easy to remove so I can put on the orthotics. Another plus on these shoes is the tongue slot which you can thread the laces through to keep the tongue in place, love that. I think I'll put them in a closet and hang on until the smaller twin fits in. Overall these shoes are ok which literally means 3 stars. The mediocre star rating is based on the fact that they are small, very expensive, lack flexibility and lack arch support.

Pros
  • The New Balance 990 has been my favorite tennis shoe for years.
Cons
  • Not suitable for outdoor activities due to the light sole.
