The back makes it too thick.

The plastic coating applied to the back makes the panel too thick. The screws should be an eighth of an inch longer. In addition, if there is a dimmer, the thick plate prevents you from being able to turn the dimmer on and off. I removed the back plastic cover (easy to do) and it worked. I don't know why there is a pad because without it the plate is strong and I've used metal switch plates for decades with no bump issues.
