I have just installed a new tank and am using it for the first time in a hanging canister as a biofilter. I love it. It has a texture that should encourage bacterial growth - one of the best I've seen. Being completely round and porous, they should have maximum contact and growth with water. There are no fish in the tank and the ammonia digestion has really skyrocketed: the tank is consuming a total of 4 parts per million of dissolved ammonium chloride per day and I attribute that to Eheim Substrate. Eheim products tend to be expensive here in the US, many of them are redesigned which often makes their performance less than outstanding, but I think they hit the spot. how much to use As many as possible.
