I had this scratching post once when it came with a foster cat and I would say it is one of the best horizontal scratching posts I have tried. I recently babysat two cats (I have them at home) and after stopping them from scratching the futon they soon started scratching my carpet. I've noticed that while they use the vertical scratching posts I have for my own cats, they also like horizontal surfaces, so I bought this scratching post to try. And it worked! A cat immediately stopped scratching the carpet and started using it. The other one is still thinking (she puts off almost everything except food) and I still have to keep an eye on her and stop her when she scratches the carpet. Great purchase and saved my rug! I also have cardboard horizontal scratching posts which my cats love but I have to collect the shredded paper after them. Carpet makes my life so much easier and I know from my experience of maintaining it that it is very hard wearing and lasts a very long time. I wasn't planning on leaning it against a wall or furniture, so I don't know how it works. I don't want to try it because once it falls and falls on the cats, they might not want to try again. If your cat likes to scratch vertical surfaces, I would buy a scratching post or other vertical scratching posts.
