A faulty latch caused an explosion during use

Well I bought this because I thought the idea of switching between K-cups for baby's hot cocoa and a reusable basket for my coffee grounds would be a big plus would be the old scoop coffee maker I used to have. Pros: It's pretty easy to use once you do it a few times. My coffee tasted great and the temperature was very, very hot. It also doesn't take long to brew a single serving or a 14-ounce serving. There is a viewing window on the side through which you can see how much water is in the machine. The Bad: It's not very convenient to wash afterwards. The hinge on the coffee grounds container doesn't seem to want to stay closed until it fits snugly into the coffee maker and the lid snaps shut. As for the skew, I have to wonder if the bottom doesn't stay closed above the max line when it's installed in the car. It's also pretty unwieldy for what it is. Coffee makers per serving may be smaller. Deformity: On the morning of this review, the coffee maker exploded under pressure, spraying boiling hot water and coffee grounds in all directions. See image. There was a few angry words and I spent the next 15 minutes putting everything away. I think the latch failed because it wouldn't latch securely afterwards. Note. I filled the coffee basket just below the max line and poured 14 ounces of water directly onto the fill line. This was only my 6th-7th time using the device. I was able to brew another cup after cleaning, but I can't believe this thing doesn't explode on me at 5:30 in the morning when I'm trying to walk out the door to go to work. So I took it back to Kohl's, went to Walmart and bought a new $37 Scoop. Overall, this would have been a good coffee maker, deserving of at least 4 stars, were it not for the faulty locking mechanism and chunky filter basket. However, considering how bad it would have been if I had been standing right in front of the coffee maker when it exploded, I have to give it less than 3 stars. While this is a smart design, I would not recommend it to anyone as a faulty latch can pose a security risk. Do yourself a favor and buy a Keurig for your K Cups or a Hamilton Beach Scoop for your one-time pitches.
