Underneath the piece of rubber covering the cleat screws was what appeared to be an oval plug that ripped as soon as I tightened the cleat. Under the post was what looked like glue stuck to a shoe. I put on the cleats but found it very difficult to fit them into the Crank Brothers caramel cleats I have. I'm guessing these shoes had some sort of padding that was removed and replaced with a sticker. In any case, I ended up cutting out an oval spacer out of plastic about 1.5mm thick and placing it under the peg. The combination of shoes and boots now works great.
