Review on πŸ’‘ Enhance Your Smart Lighting Experience with the Philips Hue Smart Button by Robert Larris

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Nice product, disappointing software design

Button itself is good. The mounting plate looks a bit cheap but is small enough to fit onto an existing switch panel with a mini bracket and looks good. The big problem with this product is the design of the software when you want to turn off the light. Simply put, this product cannot turn off lights or lights in the same room (*edit: via software). It can dim the lights in the room or turn off all the Hue lights in the house. These are your two options. Yes, the button can be assigned to room lights, but the only disable feature you'll find is ALL Hue lights; not just the ones in the assigned room. Yes. All of them. Having that option is fine, but making it the only option is just bad product design. Given this huge limitation, I have no idea what the intended use of this product should be. Maybe it's the "go to sleep" button? Why should I turn the lights on in one room but turn them off everywhere? This significant limitation should be mentioned in marketing. *Edit (after a few months of living with it): My statement above about not being able to software assign a room to "Off" remains true. However, I found that a "quick" press of the button would turn off the lights in my room (as opposed to all the lights in the house). A quick click turns off the room the button is assigned to, while a longer press and hold does what you've programmed in the Hue software. So, it's a bit more functional than I expected. In general, this button does what I need it to do, but I would like the programming to be more flexible. If you only have a couple of lightbulbs this might work for you. If you have lights everywhere in your home, you probably want a more reliable product or wait for them to fix that frustrating design flaw.
