Every home should have a smoke detector and every home should have a carbon monoxide detector. There is both here and there. For detectors I've used in the past, you should replace the battery at least once a year. A little uncomfortable. That being said, install it properly, make sure it works, test it from time to time (as you should with any security device), and according to the brochure, it lasts 10 years. Wonderful! Our old detector was at the end of its life so this was an amazing upgrade. I may have to buy another one for our basement as I spend a lot of time in there playing around with it.
