Review on πŸ”Š Enhanced Rectangular External Communications Speaker for Ham Radio, CB & Scanners by Shane Minter

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Don't believe the ads. It's not as good as the reviews say.

I bought four of these speakers based on positive reviews but I have to believe the positive reviewers have never used a quality external speaker in their radios. I've tested one on the SDS100 and SDS200 to see if they are stewards and I'm not thrilled. With the SDS100, the sound was quieter than with the built-in speaker. This is certainly due to the fact that the output is for headphones and a amplifying speaker is really required for use with any walkie-talkie, but I really didn't buy them for handhelds, I bought them for mobile phones. So I tried the SDS200's speaker and although it does get sound out of the case the sound is very high pitched and tinny, much like the built in speaker of a portable radio. The sound doesn't compare to the much larger built-in speaker on the SDS200 (or any other portable radio for that matter). I pulled up one of my 30 year old unamplified Radio Shack speakers for comparison and, well, it's not really a comparison. If you just want to get the sound out of your radio for the lowest price, these speakers will definitely do the trick. But if you want good, usable sound quality, get a bigger speaker. Somewhere I knew deep down that those tiny speakers would have tiny sound, but I didn't listen to the voice of experience. It's time to bring them back and get something big and boxy like Uniden or Whistler speakers.
