Soldering plumbing is an art best left to the professionals and newer overhead fittings are still more expensive but the simplicity of compression fittings allows check valves to be added anywhere along the pipe where there is enough room for a pipe cutter and a pair of wrenches. One of these ball valves now allows me to shut off individual leads to bathrooms and laundry from the basement for convenience and dryness reasons, and keep everything else in order when I want to swap out (and dry later) washing machine hoses or hard-to-reach bathroom fixtures.
