In 1967 I bought a Speedy Stitcher sewing awl and hand sewed a fully enclosed fabric top for my Jeep (except for the doors). I couldn't afford to buy a top and the weather was rainy. Since then I've used an awl (the same needle) to sew numerous belts, shoes, an archery quiver, knife sheaths, and many other leather goods and camping gear. I used several spools of thread. A few weeks ago I made a leather sheath for a machete. I sewed layers of leather 1/4 inch thick. I made great progress and got a little overly elated, pushing too hard and bending the needle. As a result, needle number 4 broke after 53 years of faithful service. I couldn't complain; it broke due to "operator error". I have no reason to believe that the replacement parts recently purchased are of inferior quality. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.
