It's not as important as I had hoped. When the ice is first taken out of the freezer it will not be strong enough to break the ice. We have found that when room temperature water is poured onto very cold ice, it "jumps out" and the sampler works perfectly. Considering what we wanted it for - our little dogs love ice cream but at their age they need smaller pieces. That extra step isn't a problem for us and we love it for the price, but if you wanted it for cocktails then taking that extra step will be a deal breaker and you may have to take a bigger step.
