Review on Sony SAL-135F18Z: High-performance 135mm f/1.8 Carl Zeiss Sonnar T Telephoto Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera by James Townsend

Great lens but really need SSM!

This lens produces sharp images with lots of detail. However, I believe you need a full frame body to get the most out of the quality of this lens. With a wide range of working focal lengths, it can hunt a bit in low light (similar to the range of a macro lens). If he had SSM, maybe it could solve this problem. The lens weighs over 2 pounds but has all-metal construction, including a focus ring (much better than rubber ones, which pick up dust, dirt, and white oxidation easily). I personally prefer the sal85f14 because of the ED glass (the sal85f14 does not have the ED glass). Also, this lens does not change length when focusing while sal85f14 changes length when focusing. Although the focus ring does not rotate during autofocus, you cannot focus manually (or risk damaging the screw motor drive) in autofocus mode. If it had SSM, you could focus manually in autofocus mode. The clutch is useful to help with missing SSM. For example, if you're focusing on the subject but not the back, you can simply move the camera forward or backward (or move yourself forward or backward) while holding the grip to get the right part of the subject. in focus. You can try to focus again, but it may take too long, and you cannot focus manually without setting the focus switch to manual, which may take too long. In any case, this lens is all we have for now and definitely worth buying, but I'll switch to the SSM version as soon as it becomes available. I also hope they weatherproof the next version of this lens, but weatherproofing doesn't matter (because according to a study I read online somewhere, Canon L lenses with weatherproof coatings are just as dusty as non-weatherproof lenses).

Pros
  • Close focus (less than 3 feet)
Cons
  • Zero
