Review on πŸ“· Sony LA-EA4 Full Frame A-Mount to E-Mount FF Lens Adapter with TMT by Russ Charmin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Decent for what it is, built-in autofocus, technology maybe a decade old. Not bad, but not great either.

As you can see from the description, this adapter is used to connect A-mount lenses to Sony E-mount. So aperture 2.8 becomes 3.x. Mmm, no big deal. The autofocus is based on contrast detection (identical to the first generation A99 autofocus). Everything is OK. A bit slow by today's standards. Although I use it for the A7SII, which has an autofocus up to EV-4, it's a pity that only EV-0 or -1 can do this focus. If you already have A-mount lenses and now have an E-mount camera (like the Alpha series), that's pretty decent. But if you're using the A7RII or likely future A9 series cameras, I've been told that the LA-EA4 allows pass-through autofocus, so you can actually use the real camera's phase-detection autofocus (which is much faster), instead of relying on the autofocus adapter. Since I'm using the A7SII, this pass-through option isn't available, forcing me to use the adapter's autofocus, relegating me to the LA-EA4 as my only option. However, if you're looking for a new lens and think the LA-EA4 is a good option for mounting a new A-mount lens on an A7, A9 or A6xxx, I wouldn't recommend it. At $400 (hell, even $150) the price premium isn't worth it. It is better to buy only FE lens (FE = E-mount lens compatible with full frame camera vs. E-lens which is APS-CE mount lens).
