I bought this mat to scan some of my stencils. This allows me to create a one-off copy that I can use with permanent paints and inks. The original stencil remains and I don't have to worry about keeping it clean. Smudged stencils can be more difficult to place in the exact spot on the page since you can't see through them as easily. I discovered this mat after a couple of my stencils got really dirty and I found a YouTube video suggesting this alternative.
