I smoke large chunks of meat and needed a new instant readout. I have multi-probe wireless thermometers that are great for monitoring temperatures over time, but sometimes it's easier to have a handheld thermometer to check the areas of the chest or pork shoulder where there aren't sensors are. This thermometer fits the bill perfectly. The display is large, easy to read, and pulling out the probe turns it on instantly. It's not a problem to read, although I've seen more "instantaneous" thermometers that get up to temperature almost literally instantly. It's not a hit as the price is excellent for its performance and its accuracy is good in my tests. I haven't tested this for candy or chefs, only for grills, so I can't confirm its effectiveness in measuring the melting point of sugar or caramel when making candy. I can't imagine it wouldn't be suitable for this purpose, especially with a second sensor. Good value for a good thermometer.
