It protects the duvet, which is usually quite expensive when you buy a duvet! The reason some of you buy a "thin sheet" is because yes, it's a thin sheet that zips up and slides over your comforter. It's called a blanket. You need both. Let's repeat. Blanket = thick blanket. Usually fluff. Duvet cover = a thin sheet (such as a pillowcase) worn over a duvet to keep it clean. You need both.
