Review on πŸ’Ώ Sony BDU-X10S Blu-ray 2X BD-ROM/8x DVD-ROM SATA Drive with Software - Black by Charles Mathews

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great hardware, broken software - can't play new Bluray discs with web interface

Bluray players installed and working immediately. Plays OLD Bluray Discs Flawlessly - Beautiful HD and Sound! The critical issue is the software required to play the discs - it just doesn't play many NEW Bluray discs! Out of 3 Blu-ray discs, only 1 could be played! This is a notorious problem that renders your player virtually unusable without a manual solution:[.][.]Ironically, this software problem even exists for the HD-DVD version of this software. The problem occurs on all discs that contain enhanced web content (common on NEW Bluray discs). Cyberlink, makers of the PowerDVD software, programmed it so poorly that it actually CRASHES when most certain Bluray discs are inserted. Heroes, Dawn of the Dead, Spiderman and many others had this problem as early as early 2007 because of new web content. When PowerDVD tries to fetch this content, it just crashes. You cannot watch any movie other than navigating through the title menu. PowerDVD also has an automatic update function for patches. It also fails. Cyberlink just pretends that this problem doesn't exist, so you'll have to email their support to get the patch - they actually promise not to share it! Update: after a lot of pressure they finally released the patch. [ .] You need Internet Explorer for access. So the hardware player is excellent. However, Bluray decoding requires the use of PowerDVD and this software just doesn't work. So far I've been able to play 1 out of 3 Blu-ray discs before complaining to Cyberlink. Sony needs to provide other Bluray software or stop blocking Bluray discs so only Cyberlink can play them.
