I ordered two of these trays to help my husband when he was trying to get our daughter to help clean the trays. We've all seen the video showing how it works and we were all very excited to receive these new tablets. Our days of digging in the sand for treasure are over! When we received the boxes I noticed that the clasps that close the lid at the bottom felt flimsy and the material was thinner than I expected. Putting everything together seemed more difficult than necessary, but I put that down to the fact that everything was new and tough. Then the locks were very difficult to close. The drawer only needed to be adjusted a certain way to close properly, and it took some effort to get everything lined up just right. But since it only had to be opened up to add more junk, I wasn't too concerned. So for cleaning. I've personally cleaned them a number of times now (those newfangled gadgets to help my husband and daughter have kind of become my responsibility) and (spoilers) I've thrown away everything that made this tray unique. It's hard to turn the tray over. You need to do this slowly so the filling seeps through and is wide enough that you have to get up and bend over the box to roll it up. You should change this shell often because if it has too much waste it will overflow the trap and this will cause it. Let's just leave it at "Chaos".3. The lid always gets dirty because the floor can't possibly be free of dirt when the cats get in and out. Not to mention the junk that squirts out, which has happened to me every time I've tried this method. 4. The trap doesn't quite fit in the "cut" area, and usually not much goes in that gap. Also, anything that falls down when you pull the trap is not only disgusting, it also leads to something. "Desolation".5. In addition, the filter has shifted several times, so you have to work directly on the places that touched the used dirt to fix it. (I prefer to just grab the lid and handle of the dustpan) I'm fed up with "garbage" on the floor and piles of garbage on the floor after cleaning. I was fed up with back pain after clearing out just one of those boxes. I'd rather sit and dig for treasure than deal with all the crap that comes with using this box for its intended purpose. Once everything that makes these boxes special has been removed, they become even worse than the cheapest standard lidded boxes, as the grooved sections intended to hold the filter in place (but not always successfully) make it difficult to to use a shovel because it you have to skip these grooves. If you don't have the money to fully upgrade to a self-cleaning tray, KISS (Keep It Simple.) and use standard trays!
