The outer shell is made of a very dark material almost like plastic. The sun definitely doesn't get through this thing. It's great for its purpose of protecting sensitive skin from the sun! The opening and closing mechanism feels a little stiff and slams shut, and when you press the button again to close, it half-snaps. Seems to be something that doesn't hold up well over time. We'll see how long it lasts over time and I hope my guess is wrong and it'll remain usable for many years to come. has a hole in its place. I was hoping it would take more than two weeks when I originally reviewed the item. It was very uncomfortable and now I would say I cannot recommend this umbrella. Before you ask, it hasn't been used in high winds and nothing has been broken that would cause it to bend. My wife used this and I think she found the strength to pull the wrapper out. If it doesn't stand up to normal use, the packing is really bad. I'm glad the price wasn't higher otherwise it would have hurt more. I don't know if it can be returned but if it is possible it will be returned and we will try another brand. My regular nylon umbrellas have lasted longer than this one!
