I've found the key to this is NOT. Do not overload the hook as it will not make you slip off easily. Applying the base to the scalp will help it stay there when it gets frizzy. It has both clockwise and counterclockwise curls. My crochet keeps falling apart when I pull through my long hair so I just added some super glue and it stopped. It takes time and patience to get it working and I'm having a hard time doing the backend. But overall it's fun to clean up!
