Review on BLACK+DECKER Workmate Portable Workbench WM125: 350 lb. Capacity - Efficient and Mobile by John Langdon

Works well, great value

Costing less than most goats, this workbench is far more versatile and functional than anything else within a mile of its price. It's a workbench, vise, trestle, and de facto router table, spindle sander table, or other type of table, depending on which power tool you're holding upside down in the middle! In addition, it is lightweight and portable, yet made (almost entirely) of high-quality materials. There are a few things about him that I could fault. The handles feel flimsy, the lid begins to loosen a bit when unscrewed all the way, and the assembly instructions, which start out simple enough, abruptly lose legibility at step 4. (I can only surmise that the technical editor in charge got in at this point while he was drawing, got a text message from his wife asking for a divorce, got drunk and ended up writing the manual in an alcoholic daze.) As well anyway, there is a black and decker youtube video that greatly improves the problem. The other reviews here have some good suggestions for DIY upgrades you can make to improve your workbench. Personally, I've used machine screws to attach the handles (instead of hammering the pins in), used superglue to permanently attach the rubber feet, and bought some inexpensive saddlebag-style sandbags to weigh down the workbench. (This last tip is important for things that generate a lot of lateral force, such as hand planing with a plane, since the table is fairly light and can move in these circumstances.)

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • There are flaws
