This 4TB external hard drive is used as a DVR expander for my DirecTV Genie. So here's a little background: I have Verizon Fios and DirecTV Genie at home. (Yes I have both for sports etc.). I have used Western Digital's 1TB expandable DVR expanders in both Directv and my Fios service for several years. Western Digital works great, though. 1TB just isn't enough when I'm going on vacation or recording a lot of shows during the week. I was looking for the perfect solution for my storage needs. I found what I was looking for in a Fantom 4TB drive. (Disclaimer, this drive only works with my Directv Genie, my fios box doesn't recognize it). Pros: - The drive really expands my DirecTV Genie up to 4TB. I have literally over 80 hours of HD content and only 4% is complete so far. It's 96% free. Knowing the capacity limits of 1TB, I can say that Directv Genie uses every 4TB of space. Easy to install and use (just unplug the receiver, plug in this drive, then boot up the receiver). Receiver or your viewing of channels and shows. - If the power ever goes out, after a reboot it goes right back to where it left off and picks up all my shows. Cons - The blinking blue light is very annoying and distracting. Use black electrical tape to cover this light. Compared to Western Digital's 1TB DVR expanders, this drive definitely makes some noise. Nothing too loud or unbearable, but you can definitely hear the drive grinding. If you keep it away or under a shelf, it's fine. The build quality of the case is not the best. It looks a little cheap but looks aren't everything I guess. - Does NOT come with an eSata cable. Luckily I had an extra Western Digital hard drive, but if you don't have one, get one. Does NOT work with fios, only with directv as i tested. Overall I am very happy with the purchase of this disc. I know I can be gone for weeks and all my shows are being recorded without ending right away. It's not perfect, but for the price and high capacity (4TB) it's a great deal! Obtain!
