I don't know if these would work for runners who cover a lot of miles, but they are just perfect for those of us who switch shoes going in and out. I keep these on several of my indoor pairs as they make them easier to use and less likely I'll not change when going out on wet, or salty or dirty drives. I actually can do 1 pair of shoes with one lace as most of mine are 4-6 grommets each. My 'On' sneakers (Swiss-made & $100+) use ties like this and they just use a knot to keep the lace in place at the end closest to your ankle. Using that method the plastic ends are superfluous, but not a problem either. Only reason I didn't give them higher stars for durability is that I haven't had them long enough to report.
