I have a 10 year old cat that weighs 18 pounds. I needed a new tray and I was attracted to its high sides, my cat is a digger, he digs a hole, does his job and then digs it in. He also likes to pee in the side of the box that was always taped to my last litter box (reason for a new purchase). This box was a bit more than I expected, but due to the thickness of the box's side/bottom construction, I expect to be by the time I have to buy 3 of my last box, which I bought from a local pet store. Which ultimately are savings. From day one I've always had a problem with a lump of filling sticking to the sides and bottom of the box. I'm not sure what this box is covered with, but whoever thought of covering the box, thanks! My shovel glides easily along the bottom making cleaning a lot easier. Since using this box I have had NO sticky sides/bottom or little clumps to sift through. I wish I could say the same about my shovel! I will definitely look for a shovel from this manufacturer that uses the same materials. Update 2+ months - I still love this box (as much as one can love a litter box). There are no scratches here at all. Since I use clumpy litter and my cat likes to dig, I usually had to clean the box and after a month it looked like it was 10 years old. I've been using it for several months and nothing sticks to it. However, I highly recommend it
