We bought a box of universal filters for our water filter because we felt the price of the original replacement kit was too high. We still think they're pretty pricey, but regular filters just don't do the job, so I'd say they're worth it. Our water straight from the tap is grim, so we need either bottled water or filtered water. . Conventional filters almost did not change the taste of the water, and it was drinkable only in very cold weather. Even then it was not very pleasant. These filters get rid of the awful taste and the water is pretty good even at room temperature.
