It protects my desk which was the main purpose of my purchase. I don't care about the thread bucket, but it's easy to remove. I would get more use out of it if there was a detachable pincushion instead of a bucket. Also, the bucket is attached to the right side of the pillow, and when you get up from the chair, your foot will touch the bucket.
