I studied geology and for me the highlight of this magnifier is the UV light option. When you flip it, there's a little switch. Right click on it and two very bright white LEDs will light up. Click on it on the left and you will get a UV LED. It's a lot of fun because knowing that certain minerals glow under ultraviolet light allows me to determine the composition of the rock. I wish I had one like this in college! Others have commented on whether it's really 40x, but I don't care - I had the UV option! The small key needed to open the battery compartment is stored in a cutout in the lining inside the oval case, and the case is about the size of a goose egg (approximately 3 inches long and 2 inches wide). to the seller for contacting me to ask if it arrived and if I was satisfied - I am completely satisfied. If you have a friend who is an avid "rock hacker" like me, this would make a great gift.
